Where does Hillary Clinton Stand on Children’s Rights in the USA?

Urge Secretary Clinton to Help Save Ariana-Leilani

How a leader handles a crisis reveals what they are made of and the quality of the people they choose to support them.   Do they respond with integrity?  Do they check the facts before they act?  Are they careful about who they get their information from?

Around the time the US press was preoccupied with the Bengazi scandal, the US Press overlooked another international scandal that was closer to home but just as concerning.

Due to concerns expressed by medical and humanitarian authorities, the UN Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography made an inquiry to Secretary Clinton’s US State Department questioning the US violations of the rights of dual citizen German-American Ariana-Leilani, who lives in Washington DC.

Rather than make an independent inquiry into those concerns, Secretary Clinton’s State Department blindly referred the matter to the District of Columbia Child and Family Services (DC CFS) — which has a well established record of incompetence that is so poor it is under a US Federal Court monitor.    Not surprisingly, the leaders of the DC CFSA at the time had known sex offenses (its Director having had sex with one of his young patients, and the other, its General Counsel, charged and placed on probation for indecent exposure in a public restroom).   Despite those sex offense records, both were allowed to run and operate the agency that was responsible for protecting DC’s children.   The then General Counsel of the DC CFSA, James Toscano Court Papers, personally interfered with Ariana-Leilani’s getting relief from abuse and neglect, including engaging in ex parte communications with a DC Superior Court judge and making false statements to that judge to help cover up the abuse and neglect that Ariana-Leilani was suffering.

As part of its coverup of the abuse and neglect of Ariana-Leilani, based on documents obtained from the Department of State, DC Child and Family Services Agency (DC Child Protection Services) had Mr. Toscano author the misleading and inaccurate response for the Department of State to the UN Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography.  Not surprisingly, his response was filled with misstatements of the facts, misleading the Secretary Clinton’s US Department of State, and in turn, the UN Special Rapporteur.

The real disappointment here is that Secretary Clinton’s Department of State blindly forwarded — under Secretary Clinton’s signature —  the Toscano-drafted response to the UN Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography.   We have to presume this was done by her without either checking the facts or checking the background of the author of the underlying letter.   As a result, the UN Special Rapporteur took no action and Ariana-Leilani continues to suffer.

In her run for the Presidential offices, Secretary Clinton should be as concerned about children’s rights and she is about women’s rights.   Unfortunately Secretary Clinton’s record has not demonstrated any concern for children’s rights — including failing to have the US ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.   Thus, help urge Secretary Clinton to protect children’s rights, to right this wrong, and to use her influence to help Save Ariana-Leilani…

DC Mayor Bowser

A Culture of Complete Denial of Sexual Abuse for 16 years

RotherhamLike Washington DC (where Ariana-Leilani lives), it was found that Rotherham England had a culture of “complete denial” over child sexual abuse.  However unlike Rotherham England, the US Government has failed to take action to correct it.

A report commissioned by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said theRotherham England authority was “not fit for purpose”.   As a result the council leader Paul Lakin has resigned and the council cabinet will also quit.   An earlier inquiry found 1,400 children were abused by gangs of men, mainly of Pakistani origin, from 1997 to 2013.    The National Crime Agency (NCA) of England said the latest report, by Louise Casey, the director-general for troubled families at the Communities Department, identified “a number of potentially criminal matters”.   Files passed to the NCA relate to one former and one existing councillor arising from the inquiry, Ms Casey’s spokesperson said.  Investigators found the council had a “deep-rooted” culture of cover-ups and silencing whistleblowers, Ms Casey said.

The report found the child sexual exploitation (CSE) team was poorly directed, suffered from excessive case loads, and did not share information between agencies.   Ms Casey said: “This inspection revealed past and present failures to accept, understand and combat the issue of child sexual exploitation, resulting in a lack of support for victims and insufficient action against known perpetrators.”  A spokesman for the NCA said it would “examine a number of potentially criminal matters identified during a recent inspection of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council.”

Urge Washington DC to reform its culture of denial of sexual abuse, and help save Ariana-Leilani:

Pope Francis and Ariana-Leilani

A video documenting the historic meeting between Pope Francis and Dr. Ariel King concerning the plight of her daughter, Ariana-Leilani.

“To think you know by looking at somebody – chances are you’re way off the mark,”

Matthew Coniglio’s had a trove of child pornography, more than 50,000 images and videos stored on laptops, external hard drives and thumb drives. including  56 8-millimeter cassette tapes they say show him raping and molesting girls.   All were unconscious, apparently drugged, FBI Special Agent William Kirkconnell, who viewed the tapes. Some were so incapacitated they were snoring.  Kirkconnell said authorities planned to bring federal charges but never got the chance.

He was a 46-year-old traveling salesman who worked and lived in cities across Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina,   After his arrest this year, Coniglio told a jailhouse nurse that he drank heavily – up to 13 beers and cocktails daily, records show.

One mother who allowed her girl to spend unsupervised time with him. The mother saw a news report about Coniglio and brought her daughter to investigators along with old photos of her.  “She recalls that he would always give her ice cream and give her hot chocolate, and she recalled that … those items at times tasted very bitter to her,” said Kirkconnell, who believes Coniglio drugged the treats to knock her out.

Children like Ariana-Leilani need to be protected…look out for the children.

President Obama Signs Law Requiring DOJ to Investigate Lax State Child Abuse Laws and Lax Enforcement

President Obama signed into law last month a law the requires the Department of Justice to investigate state child abuse laws to make sure abusers are appropriately punished. North Carolina was among the states that had incredibly lenient child abuse laws and criminal penalties.     Unfortunately, in many states, such as Washington DC and its Child and Family Services Division, child abuse by parents gets overlooked as “custody disputes,” and the courts are lax at questioning that view because they tend to defer to the Washington DC Child and Family Services Division for its questionable “expertise.”

The law was called the Kilah Davenport Child Protection Act.  It was introduced by Republican Congressman Robert Pittenger in honor of  Kilah, young North Carolina girl, who was severely beaten by her stepfather in Union County North Carolina back in 2012.

Kilah Davenport died from those injuries earlier this year.   Her death was caused by complications from the May 2012 assault that fractured her skull and left her permanently brain-damaged, a family friend said.

Here is a summary of the bill that is now law:

Library of Congress Summary

The summary below was written by the Congressional Research Service, which is a nonpartisan division of the Library of Congress.

5/20/2014–Public Law.
Kilah Davenport Child Protection Act of 2013 – Directs the Attorney General to report every three years to the congressional judiciary committees on the penalties for violations of laws prohibiting child abuse in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and each U.S. territory, including whether the laws of that jurisdiction provide for enhanced penalties when the victim has suffered serious bodily injury or permanent or protracted loss or impairment of any mental or emotional function.
Amends the federal criminal code to apply certain increased criminal penalties against any person who commits domestic assault and who has a final conviction on at least two separate prior occasions under state, federal, or tribal court proceedings (a habitual offender) for offenses that would be, if subject to federal jurisdiction, assault, sexual abuse, or a serious violent felony against a spouse or intimate partner (as under current law) or against a child of, or in the care of, the person committing the domestic assault.

Understanding the biology of sepsis in neutropenic patients

Sepsis comes with serious consequences. The blood infection, most commonly caused by bacteria, can lead to septic shock, organ failure, loss of limbs, and even death. Patients whose immune systems are already compromised are at even greater risk.  Neutropenia is a condition that Ariana-Leilani suffers is one in which patients have a low number of infection-fighting , can occur as a result of anemia, certain cancers or chemotherapy treatment, and other hereditary disorders.

Nuala J. Meyer, MD, an assistant professor of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania examined the effects of sepsis on neutropenic .  Meyer looked at a single-center cohort of patients who presented to the emergency department or medical ICU with . Of the 1,269 patients studied, nine percent were neutropenic; 75 percent had hematalogic malignancy; 15 percent had metastatic solid organ malignancy, and 15 percent were . Neutropenic patients had a higher incidence of shock and were more likely to die within 60 days, a retrospective review of their electronic health record found. Meyer and her team set out to understand why this occurs.

“We hypothesized that the neutropenic patients would have higher levels of the growth factor angiopoietin 2, a vascular growth factor and marker of injured  vessels, and that these would serve as biomarkers for the most severe cases of neutropenic sepsis,” says Meyer. Increased levels of angiopoietin is known to lead to an increase of permeability of the blood vessel, which allows the contaminated blood to travel more easily from the vessel to the rest of the body and vice versa.

Contrary to this, the study showed that the neutropenic patients not only had lower than expected levels of angiopoietin 2, but they also had high levels of inflammatory cytokines, specifically interleukin-8, a protein important to the body’s immune response. “The neutropenic patients, despite a low white blood cell count, surprised us with the increased number of cytokines compared to the immunocompetant patients,” Meyer said.

This led the team to believe that mortality risk for sepsis patients might be associated with high cytokine levels independent of severity of illness, and that anti-inflammatory medications targeting interleukin-8 specifically, might be helpful, even among neutropenic patients, as interleukin-8 is highly associated with mortality. “In the future, testing for interleukin-8 in septic patients could lead to early intervention with inflammatory medication, and possibly, better outcomes for patients,” says Meyer

Rock Out for Ryder Benefit

Ryder Has Neutropenia

Ryder Arnold is fifteen months old, and like Ariana-Leilani, has the rare blood disorder Neutropenia, which compromises the immune system.   Although Neutropenia is a non-cancerous disease, many treatments are the same as cancer patients constantly monitoring the ANC (a count that reveals the immune system’s strength), bone marrow biopsies, and takes Neupogen injections each day to help boost the immune system.

At this point, Ryder’s prognosis, like Ariana-Leilani’s, is unclear.

Friends of Arnold’s have organized a benefit for Ryder. They have named it “Rock out for Ryder.”   Some of the proceeds will be donated to the Ella Jewell Foundation, which is a Neutropenia research foundation named after a little girl who died of Neutropenia.  Rock Out for Ryder will take place on Friday, May 16, at the Music Union Hall (116 N. Green Street). Three rock bands will perform: The War I Survived, Mudoon’s Clever Girls, and Canzo. The show begins at 7 p.m., admission is $5 and the event is BYOB. All ages are welcome.

Ariana-Leilani is being denied the Neupogen that is helping to keep Ryder alive.   Please consider signing her petition to get proper treatment:
