Sepsis: The Uncontrollable Killer

sepsis

Just hours before he fell ill with sepsis and went to the hospital, and never went home.

Ariana-Leilani has been diagnosed with neutropenia — low immunity causing high risk of infection.   Although she can look perfectly normal, a few hours can mean the difference between life and death.   Neutropenic patients are particularly prone to sepsis, which is the most common killer of Americans.   It is an infection can suddenly turned into the life-threatening condition called septic shock.

Most vexing about sepsis is that doctors can only treat the symptoms. They don’t have an effective treatment for the underlying condition — antibiotics don’t work.

One thing that can help is prompt medical attention — especially when an infection is accompanied with some of the symptoms of sepsis, such as confusion, rapid heartbeat, shaking and skin rash.   In a neutropenic patient, like Ariana-Leilani, GCSF is one of the medicines that can boost the immune system.

Congressional Briefing on the Failure of Family Courts, Placing Children with Abusive Parents

Dr. Joy Silberg and Others Expose Corrupt Practices of the Family Courts in Abuse Cases

  • 75 percent of all contested custody cases involve abuse of children
  • Court’s fail to recognize the rights of children to live free of abuse
  • Epidemic across the United States
  • Visit http://www.courageouskids.net
  • It takes on average 5 years to turn around abuse cases
  • Learn about actual cases where abusive parents were given custody and they ultimately killed the child — even when the abusive parent was not the birth parent of the child
  • Turn about occurs most often when a new evaluation is done by a qualified evaluators
  • CPS findings were irrelevant to the outcome
  • The GALs almost exclusively signed with the abusive parent
  • CPS agencies teach their social workers to discount the evidence of abuse when there is a custody dispute
  • Its about the rights of the child, not about the rights of the parents.
  • Abuse is in the news every day; many criminal activities are carried out by children who were abused — we are all affected.
  • Costs 500 billion dollars per year in taxpayer money

Leutrell Osborne, Sr. Former CIA Case Officer, Joins Fight to Save Ariana-Leilani

WASHINGTON DC, and GENEVA –8 January 2014 — Dr. Ariel King, President and Chair of the Ariana-Leilani Children’s Foundation International, an internationally recognized advocate for children’s human rights, announced today that Mr. Leutrell M. Osborne, Sr., agreed to serve as the Vice-Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.  Mr. Osborne is an ideal choice because he brings a unique perspective of channeling his international intelligence experience into global peace and harmony.

With the Foundation’s mission dedicated to the advocacy, education, global adoption and adherence of children’s’ human rights, based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), Dr King has been selecting a team of experts since 2009 to help facilitate the treatment of Ariana-Leilani, a 10 year old, who is being denied access to medication that would save her life.  Said Dr. King, “I knew Mr. Osborne was the right person for the Foundation after reading Mr. Osborne’s memoir:  Black Man in the CIA (2012).  The United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) hired Mr. Osborne for 27 years and he served as a Case Officer, Communications Security Officer and more importantly, he was a Counter Intelligence officer who has experience identifying, analyzing and neutralizing adversaries in over 30 countries on 4 continents.  With his retirement from federal service in 1994, Mr. Osborne opened his services to domestic and international clients, like our Foundation, and his combination of experiences would add valuable insight into how to address the human
rights of children, including Ariana-Leilani Margarita Alexandra King-Pfeiffer.”

Mr. Osborne’s skill set is exactly what is required for the delicate situation of Ariana-Leilani, a 10-year old dual German/American citizen with a rare disorder, who is being denied access to life-saving medical treatments.  The Foundation’s attorney, Mr. Roy Morris, added, “Mr. Osborne brings a fresh perspective into this fight for children’s human rights, including those of Ariana-Leilani’s.  His experience and understanding of the inner workings of the intelligence community and the “dirty tricks” that some of its members sometimes undertake will be essential for our success.”

Mr. Osborne’s company, The Osborne Group International, improves company cultures and efficiencies for its clients by utilizing teams of skilled risk managers who perform organizational transformations to mitigate difficult business challenges that can arise either from the normal flow of business or from unanticipated contingencies.  Stated Mr. Osborne, “We’ve experienced a lot of challenging situations, similar to Ariana-Leilani’s, where everyone knows what they should do, but maneuvering within the system requires a lot of intelligence. That’s why I’m looking forward to working with Dr. King and the Foundation.  I can bring my expertise, experience, and network of relationships to provide an even higher standard of business, analysis, risk assessment and due diligence support.

How Plerixa Fights Neutropenia

English: Reference ranges for white blood cell...

Ariana-Leilani suffer from Severe Chronic Neutroepnai.   Neutropenia is a condition characterized by the lack of a type of white blood cells, also known as neutrophils, in one’s blood circulation. Patients with neutropenia who receive plerixafor become prone to oral, skin, genital infections and in worst cases, a fatal whole-body infection.

Previously, it was known that Plerixafor increases the concentration of these white blood cells in the blood by inhibiting a protein called CXCR4. This inhibition prevents neutrophils in the blood stream from returning to the bone marrow, which is the primary compartment where the white blood cells are stored and released. It is therefore commonly accepted that the efficacy of the drug arises only from the release of these white blood cells from the bone marrow.

However, scientists at SIgN found that the inhibition of CXCR4 by the drug actually plays a dual role – it increases the neutrophil count in the blood through their release from the lungs, while simultaneously promoting their retention in the blood stream. Results of the study were published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM).

Discovery of this additional mode of action not only provides a deeper understanding on the drug’s mechanism; it also contributes to a more effective use of the drug, which may help to reduce the risk of bacterial infections in neutropenic patients.

“We have identified the precise mechanisms of plerixafor treatment, which has important implications on its usage. We can understand through this study the effectiveness or limitations of the drug on certain patients and thereafter craft new clinical approaches to better treat them. Our study forms a conceptual framework to establish improved therapeutic strategies for neutropenia,” said team leader Dr. Ng Lai Guan from SIgN.

The article can be found at: Devi S et al. (2013) Neutrophil mobilization via plerixafor-mediated CXCR4 inhibition arises from lung demargination and blockade of neutrophil homing to the bone marrow.

Porn Probe: 341-people Arrested by Police (Day 14 of 19 Days of Activism Against Child Abuse)

Child Pornography

Child Pornography (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

341 people, including 108 Canadians and 76 Americans, have been arrested in an international child pornography ring that was largely centred around a Toronto-based film company that distributed images and videos across the globe.  The three-year investigation included Canadian and international law enforcement agencies and rescued. Dubbed Project Spade, police said the effort resulted in 386 children being saved from exploitation.

Police first became aware in 2010 that Toronto-based Azov Films was distributing pornographic images and videos of children as well as streaming them on its website.   In 2011, police carried out a search warrant in Toronto’s west end. Azov was shut down and its owner, 42-year-old Brian Way was arrested. More than 45 terabytes of data were seized.

Way was charged with multiple counts related to child pornography, including selling and distributing child pornography and instructing commission of offence for criminal organization.

The company had been operating since 2005 and had revenues in excess of $4-million.   For approximately $40 customers could buy about an hour of video, and receive photos at a discount, delivered online or by mail, police say.

Some of the children exploited in the films were as young as five.  Azov commissioned videographers around the world to take pictures and images that the company would subsequently distribute through the mail and online. Many of the victims were from Ukraine and Romania.  Many of the pictures and videos were shot in people’s apartments, back yards and “dingy saunas.”

24 Canadian children were rescued as a result of Project Spade.  The children were not necessarily involved in the production of Azov material, and their exploitation was discovered when police were investigating people who bought material from the company.

At the home of a retired teacher, they found 350,000 pictures and more than 9,000 video showing child sexual abuse. They say some of the children were known to the man, who is also accused of abusing a child in his family.  Spinoff investigations led to caches of images and hundreds of children from around the world.  At least two teachers and nine medical professionals were among the Canadians arrested.

Beaven-Desjardins said Toronto police subsequently shared the company’s customer databases with other Canadian as well as international law enforcement agencies.

Information on Azov led to more than 150 law enforcement actions against Americans who were purchasing material from the company, including persons in the District of Columbia.

Project Spade arrests by the numbers

  • Ontario: 50
  • Rest of Canada: 58
  • United States: 76
  • International: 164

In Canada:

  •  40 teachers
  •  9 doctors and nurses
  •  32 volunteers
  •  6 law enforcement personnel
  •  9 faith leaders
  •  3 foster parents

‘Cover-up’ over VIPs who abuse children in care POLICE chiefs are turning a blind eye to members of the Establishment abusing children in care (Day 9 of 19 Days of Activism)

Dome, United States Capitol, Washington D. C.

From London to Washington DC, Child Protective Services agencies have unofficial policies to cover up child abuse by VIPs.   In London, a whistleblower said he was warned by his superiors not to investigate suspected paedophiles, including a senior politician and a judge.  He said the justice system was “corrupt” and “rotten to the core” and told how vulnerable boys and girls as young as nine were plied with heroin and raped by rich and powerful men.  “There is a massive cover-up going on and those who are abusing children are being protected by the powers that be.

He said that “When I was investigating abuse at low levels, street prostitution, everything was fine but as soon as the evidence started taking me to a higher level, I was told to wind my neck in and not go any further.  Among the names given to me by abuse victims were a former Cabinet minister and a judge who had been handing paedophiles soft sentences. I was warned by a senior officer to back off and it has to be because the clients of these children were very well-connected people.”

“Trying to secure a charge of procuring a child for prostitution is no good because you are asking the child to give evidence against their boyfriend, dealer, employer and they are not going to do it.

Ariana-Leilani is a victim a similar coverup by Washington DC Child and Family Services, the DC Public School System and Medstar Health’s Georgetown University Hospital.   It is unfortunate that children of the District of Columbia must suffer to accommodate the sick perversions of those in power in the US Nation’s capital — and the officials in charge cover it up.  No doubt, to protect its politicians who abuse children is a major reason the United States is the only developed country that has failed to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Help fight this coverup in the United States, sign the petition to save 10 year old Ariana-Leilani.

Treating Kids’ Cancer With Science And A Pocket Full Of Hope

Dr. Olson draws inspiration and strength from his patients and their families. His decision to work with kids, he says, goes back to something that happened 25 years ago when he was still in training. A 7-year-old girl he was caring for died, and the loss tore at his heart. But his reaction was complicated.

“The night that she died I was walking home, and I was almost skipping or dancing,” Olson says. “I was really light, and I was singing and humming out loud. Neither of these things is typical for me. And it was so absurd to me that this really profound event had happened that day, and I was feeling so opposite.”

So he sat down on a bench and tried to figure out what was going on. It didn’t take him long to realize his mood had to be related to a conversation with the girl’s parents. He’d assumed that after their daughter’s death, they’d want to get as far away from the hospital as possible. But, no.

“They actually tracked me down, and came up and gave me a beautiful warm hug,” Olson remembers. “And they said, ‘Her death to us was as beautiful as her birth, and the reason for that was because of the words you shared with us as we went through this. And we just want you to know that you have a gift, that when medicine doesn’t go the way you want it to, that you can still help families recognize a life doesn’t have to be 90 years [long] to be beautiful.’

“And so I sat there and thought about that for a long time, and I realized that this was a gift that I had,” he says. “And not many people would recognize the gift, or have it or want to share it. But for me it felt like a calling of sorts.”

Olson tore up the applications he’d written for other medical specialties and committed himself to pediatrics. Yet, he also wanted to do research. So he wound up going to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, where he could practice medicine and be a scientist, too.

In the past 20 years, or so, Olson has cared for hundreds of children with brain cancer. Though many have survived, many haven’t.
