Injustice in DC Must Be Eliminated

Injustice in DC Must Be Eliminated

Fifty years ago today, the civil rights movement convened hundreds of thousands on the mall in front of the Lincoln Memorial to raise awareness and push for equal rights for all Americans.  Fifty years later, we stand today with laws that ban discrimination on the basis of the color of a person’s skin.  However, that is not enough.

The United States still has not adopted any federal laws guaranteeing children their rights.  The USA has still been the only holdout in ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

10 Year old African-American Ariana-Leilani is still being treated as property, right in the shadows of the Lincoln Memorial.   Treated as subhuman, she is still being denied her right to life saving medicine and medical care.

The District of Columbia government stands idly by and does nothing to help her.   It is ironic that the very persons speaking at today’s event, including Mayor Gray and President Obama, hold the keys to her proper treatment.   They will speak of the fight that we must continue for civil rights.   But, their actions speak louder than their words.   Send them a message, to walk the walk, and don’t just talk the talk.

For me, the speech is specifically about the recognition that all of us are human beings, that we all have human rights and all of our human rights are equal. It doesn’t matter where you live, how you live, who you love, who your family is, how much money you have, we all start out being human beings. And to me, Martin Luther King was quite poignant in the fact that he was able to give that speech and allow people to see what he was talking about, that he was actually referring to our future in seeing children walking hand in hand.

What would you do if 10 year old Ariana-Leilani were your child?

If Martin is President Obama 35 Years Ago, Then Ariana-Leiliani is Michele 40 years ago.

Michelle Obama, official White House portrait.

President Obama courageously stated yesterday that his experience 35 years ago with discrimination were similar to those experienced by Trayvon Martin and other African-American’s like him now.    Ariana-Leilani is African-American, and her case highlights the second class treatment of children like her in the District of Columbia.    Its time for Ariana-Leilani to get life saving medicine and medical attention that she deserves.  Speak up for her, because she is not allowed to speak up for herself:

Silent Tears: Sexual Abuse of Children is Ten Times the Rate of Cancer

Silent Tears from Palladian Group

A recent Silent Tears Study done in South Carolina points out that:

  • One in four girls is affected by sexual abuse, one in six boys are affected, criminal sexual abuse is preventable, victims are 2 to 3 more likely to have alcohol abuse problems,
  • Child sexual abuse by relatives, including parents, is no less harmful than that by non-relatives.    However, Child Protective Services across the country discount relatives as suspected abusers.
  • The primary reason that the public is not sufficiently aware of child sexual abuse as a problem is that 73% of child victims do not tell anyone about the abuse for at least a year. 45% of victims do not tell anyone for at least 5 years. Some never disclose.
  • Children who are sexually abused are at significantly greater risk for later posttraumatic stress and other anxiety symptoms, depression
  • These psychological problems can lead to significant disruptions in normal development and often have a lasting impact, leading to dysfunction and distress well into adulthood,
  • Sexually abused children tended to perform lower on psychometric tests measuring cognitive ability, academic achievement, and memory assessments when compared to same-age non-sexually abused cohorts.
  • Sex offenders often have multiple victims. In a study of 561 sex offenders, the men in the study accounted for the sexual abuse of 195,000 children.
  • The chance of getting caught for sexually abusing a child is as low as 3%.
  • Many sex offenders carefully groom their victims and the families of their victims in an effort to gain the trust of the child and the family.
  • Even Governor Haley of South Carolina and Oprah Winfrey were victims of abuse.   “It doesn’t matter your background, it doesn’t matter your education, it doesn’t matter the wealth of your family,” Haley said. “Every child is subject to child abuse. And it was a day-care provider that was taking care of me.”

Tragic and Unnecessary…For Trayvon Martin, and for Ariana-Leilani

ariana-leilaniAttorney General Eric Holder on Monday called the death of black teenager Trayvon Martin “tragic” and “unnecessary,” but gave no hints whether the Justice Department will bring civil rights or hate crimes charges against shooter George Zimmerman in the wake of his acquittal on state murder charges Saturday.

We can prevent the tragic and  unnecessary death of black 10 year old Ariana-Leilani, living in Washington DC and suffering from untreated Severe Chronic Neutropenia (a highly compromised immune system).      Shouldn’t the USA, Mayor Gray’s DC Government, Medstar Health, and Ariana-Leilani’s father Michael Pfeiffer, do the right thing here?  Or are we doomed to repeat past mistakes and fail to protect this child, too?
